Laser Treatments

Introduction

Lasers were introduced in the specialty of dermatology in the mid-1960's. Since then, their wide acceptance in use provides striking evidence of their ability to treat precisely and effectively a number of skin diseases. Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers work by producing an intense beam of bright light that travels in one direction. This laser beam can cut, seal or vaporize skin tissue and blood vessels. The laser has the unique ability to produce one specific wavelength of light that can be varied in its intensity and pulse duration. The wavelength and power output of a particular laser determines its medical application.

When the laser is directed at the skin tissue, its light energy is absorbed by water, pigment including melanin (the brown or tan color of the skin), hemoglobin or vascular problems of the skin, and tattoo pigment.

What Type of Laser Should be Used?

In dermatology, many different types of lasers are used to treat a variety of skin conditions, growths and cosmetic complaints. No single laser system is currently capable of treating all skin conditions.

Each individual patient will be carefully evaluated as to their particular problem and then recommendations for the appropriate type of laser system will be made.
