Laser Treatment of Pigment, Tattoos and Periocular Blue Veins

After the development of the pulsed dye laser for treatment of blood vessels on the skin, considerable research and data led to the development of several other laser systems for pigmented lesions of the skin. Our physicians use Candela's Alexlazr TriVantage laser for the treatment of sunspots that are commonly found on the face and the back of the hands, freckles, brown birthmarks such as café au lait spots, and tattoos. Treatment of brown spots with the Alexlazr TriVantage laser often require anywhere from one to three sessions and treatment of tattoos can require a multitude of sessions. The effectiveness of removal of tattoos depends on whether the tattoos are professional or amateur. Amateur tattoos respond much more rapidly due to the higher placement of the ink within the skin. Additionally, with treatment of tattoos, complete removal does not always occur. As with any laser treatment, it is important to avoid the sun both before and after laser treatment so that the laser has the best chance of treating the problem. It is unlikely for any permanent lightening of the skin or scarring to occur.
